City History Of Arcadia
Arcadia is place that time has forgotten. Home to the oldest continuously run rodeo in the nation, Arcadia is a quiet country town that is a haven for antique buffs. A friendly, peaceful, and historic small town, Arcadia began as a small settlement called Tater Hill Bluff. Once a frontier gateway to Southwest Florida, Arcadia will enter the next millennium with all its charm intact. Within its 58 block Historic District are some of Florida's finest examples of turn of the century architecture, many virtually unchanged in their appearance. Originally known as "Tater Hill Bluff" Arcadia was incorporated in 1886 after the arrival of the railroad, and became DeSoto County Seat in 1888. More than 370 homes and businesses are on the National Registry of Historic Places. There is a fascinating walking tour provided for visitors-call 813-494-4033 for information. In addition, there are lots of antique shops, cafes and a Historic Museum, as well as fun activities such as swamp buggy tours and airboat rides. Canoeing and boating activities abound on the pristine Peace River that runs alongside the city. The beautiful Peace River is Florida's most popular designated canoe trail, with ample opportunities for fishing, fossil hunting and wildlife observation, including alligators, turtles wading birds and maybe even a black bear if you're lucky. Arcadia the city began as a small settlement called Tater Hill Bluff and, in 1883, was assigned a U.S. Post Office and named Arcadia. Incorporated three years later, it now serves as the county seat for DeSoto County. Unknown to most, Florida is one of the top cattle producing states and in Arcadia, cattle and citrus are king and real cowboys still find work. The area also attracts fossil hunters. It is not usual to find sharks teeth in the Peace River as well as other exciting finds like mastodon teeth. There are places along the river that when the water level is low, you can see prehistoric bones sticking right out of the limestone. Arcadia has a mayor, who is chosen from among five elected council members, as well as a city manager. Low property taxes, a modern Hospital and Schools, many Civic and Service Organizations, over 300 buildings on the National Historic Register, four golf courses, over 50 Churches, along with great boating and fishing in the Peace River. Downtown storefronts have been converted to some of the most unique antique shops in Florida. This easy-going community possess an aesthetic charm with sweeping oaks, spanish moss, and "Florida Cracker" homes. 45 minutes to Sarasota, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, and Bradenton. A few more minutes gets you to the beaches. Orlando is about 2 hours to the north. This is a great location for a year-round homeowner or affordable location for a snowbird. Many snowbirds come to Arcadia for the winter.
